Background of the study

Religious education is recognized for its role in shaping moral character and ethical decision-making among students. In Makurdi LGA, Benue State, the persistent issue of bribery in various societal interactions has prompted educators and policymakers to examine the influence of religious instruction on students’ perspectives regarding corruption. Bribery, often seen as a minor yet pervasive act, undermines social justice and equitable development. Through religious education, students are introduced to values such as integrity, fairness, and accountability, which are pivotal in combating unethical practices. The study investigates how religious doctrines and moral teachings can serve as preventive measures against bribery by inculcating principles that denounce corrupt practices (Ibrahim, 2023). In this context, the curriculum of religious education is reviewed to determine if it equips students with the necessary ethical framework to reject bribery. The historical context of religious education in Makurdi LGA is intertwined with local cultural practices and communal values, which have long influenced societal behavior. With globalization and increased exposure to diverse cultural norms, there has been a notable shift in the perception of bribery among the youth. Recent literature highlights that robust religious instruction could be instrumental in reorienting students’ attitudes towards corruption, fostering an environment where ethical conduct is paramount (Obi, 2024). Furthermore, the increasing prevalence of bribery in both public and private sectors has necessitated an exploration of the mitigating role of religious education. Educators have reported mixed outcomes, with some students demonstrating strong ethical resistance to bribery, while others appear ambivalent. This study seeks to explore the factors contributing to these divergent outcomes, emphasizing the need for a pedagogical approach that is both contextually relevant and ethically robust. By analyzing the interplay between religious teachings and students’ moral perspectives, the research aims to provide a comprehensive evaluation of how religious education can influence attitudes towards bribery. The findings of this study are expected to contribute to academic debates on corruption prevention and offer practical insights for curriculum development that align religious values with contemporary ethical challenges (Adeyemi, 2023). The investigation also highlights the importance of community involvement and parental guidance in reinforcing ethical behavior taught in schools.

Statement of the problem

Despite the recognized potential of religious education in shaping ethical conduct, there is a noticeable gap in understanding its specific impact on students’ perspectives on bribery in Makurdi LGA. While religious education is designed to promote virtues such as honesty and fairness, bribery remains a persistent challenge in both institutional and social contexts. Many educators report that despite regular instruction in religious ethics, students sometimes exhibit ambivalence or even a tolerance towards bribery, indicating that the current curriculum may not fully address the complexities of corrupt practices. This discrepancy raises concerns about whether the instructional methods are effectively translating religious values into practical resistance against bribery (Chukwu, 2024). Furthermore, the cultural milieu and socioeconomic factors unique to Makurdi LGA may dilute the intended influence of religious education on corruption. The problem is compounded by the lack of empirical research that directly links religious instruction with a rejection of bribery. As a result, there is limited understanding of how different components of religious education—such as scriptural study, moral discussions, and community engagement—affect students’ attitudes towards bribery. This study, therefore, seeks to identify the specific elements within religious education that either mitigate or inadvertently contribute to corrupt behavior. Additionally, the influence of peer pressure and societal norms further complicates the ethical landscape, challenging the effectiveness of religious teachings in isolation. Addressing this problem is crucial for developing targeted interventions that can bolster the moral fortitude of students. A comprehensive investigation into this issue will help clarify whether religious education can be restructured to more effectively combat bribery and nurture a culture of integrity (Uche, 2023). The outcomes will not only enhance academic understanding but also provide practical recommendations for educators and policymakers aiming to strengthen ethical practices in the face of corruption.

Objectives of the study

• To assess the influence of religious education on students’ attitudes toward bribery.

• To identify the components of religious education that effectively discourage corrupt practices.

• To propose curriculum enhancements that reinforce anti-bribery ethics among students.

Research questions

• In what ways does religious education affect students’ perspectives on bribery?

• Which aspects of religious instruction are most effective in fostering anti-bribery attitudes?

• What challenges hinder the full integration of anti-corruption ethics in religious education?

Research Hypotheses

• H₁: There is a significant negative correlation between religious education and the acceptance of bribery among students.

• H₂: Curricula that emphasize moral virtues reduce students’ propensity to engage in bribery.

• H₃: Socioeconomic factors moderate the impact of religious education on attitudes towards bribery.

Significance of the study

The study’s significance lies in its potential to bridge the gap between religious instruction and ethical behavior in the context of bribery. By identifying effective pedagogical strategies, the findings could inform curriculum reforms that strengthen anti-corruption ethics. The research offers valuable insights for educators, policymakers, and community leaders striving to create a culture of integrity. Ultimately, the study aims to contribute to broader efforts to reduce corruption and promote ethical conduct in society (Emeka, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study

The study is confined to evaluating the influence of religious education on students’ perspectives on bribery within Makurdi LGA, Benue State. It focuses exclusively on the local educational system, curriculum content, and student attitudes without generalizing to other regions or contexts.

Definitions of terms
